Excursion destinations for all the family

Experience the variety of Bregenzerwald

Away from sporty activities, Bregenzerwald also provides plenty of cultural and musical excursion destinations for all ages. For anyone who wants a break from hiking and skiing, around the St. Hubertus there are abundant opportunities available to enjoy a discovery-packed day.

A ride on the Wälderbähnle, a carefully preserved nostalgia train from Schwarzenberg to Bezau, enables you to luxuriate in times past. Marvel at the old Vorarlberg artisan craft of 'Juppenfärberei' in the Juppen workshop Riefensberg. Or visit the exhibition to extol the culture of handcraft in Bregenzerwald, in Werkraumhaus in Andeslbuch. In Schwarzenberg the loveliest and best kept village square in Vorarlberg awaits, as does Schwarzenberg parish church with its wonderful paintings by artists Joseph Johann and Angelika Kauffmann. In the evening you can listen to the dreamy music of Schubert, during one of the many concerts held as part of the annual Schubertiade.

From hiking to mountain biking, skiing and tobogganing, to cultural and musical events – in Bregenzerwald there is so much for all the family to discover.

The diversity of the Bregenzerwald is not only reflected in the breathtaking nature, but also in its culinary offer. Regional, fresh, down-to-earth, re-imagined Alpine cuisine. This description is a perfect fit for our hand-picked restaurant and inn recommendations. In cosy or modern restaurants, chefs bring meals from the heart to the table. These authentic Bregenzenwald taverns, such as the “alte Mühle” or the “Hirschen” in Schwarzenberg, prove just how beautiful indulgence can be, with not only their outstanding cuisine but also their special locations. From reinterpreted delicacies in the ”Wälderhof” to warm Seelen (type of bread) and salads in the  Jöslar. In the surrounding area of the St. Hubertus, you are guaranteed to find something for every taste.

Other Recommendations:

Enjoy the lofty heights and be amazed by the panoramic view of the beautiful Vorarlberg mountain landscape: A snack stop at one of the many Alpine lodges in the Bregenzerwald is always a culinary experience. It does not matter whether you are out and about alone, with the family or with friends. A short (or also long) detour in an Alpine inn during a hike or after a tour lends the mountain experience a special indulgent touch.

Some of our recommendations found in the Schetteregg Ski and Hiking Area:

Juppenfärberei is a centuries-old handcraft that is still nurtured in the Juppen workshop. Using an age-old formula and a lengthy process, the material that is used for one of the oldest traditional costumes in Europe, the Juppen, is made. The Juppen workshop is the the course venue for making this traditional costume and accommodates a dedicated traditional costume museum.
